A Rugby Game in Spain

When we got to the Atlantis school in Las Palmas, the local guys challenged us in what was the most intense rugby game of my life. Making the teams in less than a second (Class Afloat this way and Atlantis that way) and taking a good twenty seven and a half seconds to explain the rules, we started what was revealed to be something very violent.

We only explained a very few rules to those who never played the game before and this made the game more of a weird soccer game played with our hands and a very distinctive "Kill the guy with the ball!!!" mentality. The testosterone shown by both teams exceeded all records and made Las Palmas' traditional wrestling look like a Barbie game in comparison. I must say that no more than four or five of us had played rugby before and I am not even talking about them. Tackle after tackle, I realized very soon that the field we were playing on wasn't made of grass but of a very thin layer of grass-like carpet covering concrete.

After only a few minutes, we were all covered in bruises and bleeding immeasurable litres of blood. It was so intense that the field was almost slippery due to the all the sweat dripping from our foreheads. The heat was terrible but we were still running across the field without waiting between each try.

We all knew how terrible our physical condition was after four months at sea but after playing with kids who exercise every day at school... oh my god! I have never felt out of shape like that before. Their cardio was simply putting us to shame.

After a good hour and a half, we were saved by the two o'clock bell telling that it was finally the time to eat. This is how we fought and bettered the Spanish kids in one of the most intense game ever!
