A Sense of Community in Senegal
30dec07

The sense of community runs strongly through the citizens of Dakar. Though they may not have the material possessions the western world has, they have something that we do not. Our society in North America determines wealth by the amount of money it acquires; the Senegalese measure with the amount of interactions they share with individuals in a day. At the end of the day, all our community has is abiotic factors which do not enable us total contentment. We become isolated with no one to share our riches with, where as the Senegalese are able to obtain utter happiness with the presence of friends and family in their society. Even going through the homes in Colobane, a poorer sector of Dakar, one could see that these people may not have the means we do. They may not put as much value on money and material possessions as our society in North America does, however, they still were blissful of the richness of their relationships with each other and fellow neighbours. While Africa is usually seen as a place of corruption and despair, if we were to look more closely, we'd be able to see that they hold an entity that our society lacks: conversation, community, and openness.
