Another Side of Denmark

Besides plenty of rough seas and seasickness, the sail into Bornholm held its fair share of excitement, with both the student council elections and this year's first ever Coffee House. Among the many who performed at the Coffee House, notables included Dr.T's and Amanda's blind date, Justin and Joey's poems, Cody showing his skills with his guitar and of course Tom performing some Broadway musical entirely on his own. During the Coffee House, while all were sipping on nice hot chocolate, the winners of the student elections were announced. Congratulations to Matt, Joey and Conrad!

Upon arrival into Bornholm, it was evident we had successfully come from the land of Swedish women and back to that of the Danish pastries. This time around however, we were welcomed by the feeling of the quaint small town community of Ronne instead of the busy city commotion of Copenhagen. We were also welcomed by rainy weather, and lots of it. In fact, the downpour lasted practically for our entire stay, only stopping periodically so we could have the joy of waking up at seven in the morning for a good ol' jog.

In spite of the weather, people didn’t dampen their mood and restrict themselves to staying on board. After all, floaties want to make the best of each port, rain or shine. While some were enjoying some burgers and fries down at "Sam's Corner", others were getting their large heap of dirty clothes cleaned down at the "Mont Vask" Laundromat or stocking up their watch bins with snacks and treats. Or perhaps they were just simply walking the narrow cobblestone streets of Ronne, admiring the distinct architecture of all the short red, yellow or brown homes. Oh and of course, who could forget the two kilometre walk in the pouring rain to that castle high atop a steep hill, precariously close to the cliff gaping at its back? The castle itself was composed of four outer walls, coated in rich smelling lichens, but still as strong as ever. As one student put it, "the harshness of its open roof and bare floor lay in contrast with the beauty and complex construction evident in the stonework." Although our stay was short, we had a glimpse of another side of Denmark.
